Luca Pignata was born in Merano, Italy in 1987.

His repertoire ranges from baroque music (Bach, Scarlatti, Händel, and Vivaldi) to contemporary music (Sciarrino, Gubaidulina, Lindberg, Sørensen, Ingólfsson, and Hosokawa), including also music by composers such as Messiaen, Mussorgsky, Gismonti, Ravel, and Nazareth. He performs solo, duo, ensemble, and orchestral works.

Baroque Accordion,” released in 2019, is his debut album, available in CD, Bandcamp, and the other streaming platforms. In 2025 Luca released his second solo album, Traces

Luca studied with Claudio Jacomucci at the Conservatoire of Pescara (Italy), where he earned a Master’s degree in accordion with honors (110/110 cum laude), and with Frode Haltli in Oslo, Norway, at the Norwegian Academy of Music. In addition to his musical studies, Luca holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Trento.

Luca has performed as a soloist in Italy, France, Norway, Belgium, and the Netherlands for institutions and festivals such as BOZAR Bruxelles, De Singel Antwerpen, LOD Muziektheater Gent, the Italian Institute of Culture of Amsterdam, the “La Via Lattea” festival (SVI), Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia, the Conservatories of Gent and Bolzano, Barco Ducale di Urbania, Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Verona, Sala Raffaello Urbino, Norges Musikkhøgskole Oslo, Pescara Conservatory, and the Talklang Festival in Italy.

Currently, Luca lives in Ghent, Belgium, where he works as a freelance musician and teaches accordion and ensemble in the music academies of Waregem.

He started playing the accordion at the age of nine at the local music school with Matteo Facchin, who introduced him to baroque and contemporary music at a young age. Between 2008 and 2013, he attended the Italian Accordion Academy, where he was guided by Claudio Jacomucci (accordion) and Kathleen Delaney (Alexander technique).

He has premiered the work “Tensegrity” by C. Jacomucci for eight accordions and four dancers in Amsterdam in 2012 and “Arcana” for four accordions and choir in Urbania in 2013.

In 2013, he won first prize (“Primo premio assoluto”) ex aequo at the International Accordion Competition of Santeramo in Colle (Italy). In 2014, he won second prize at the International Accordion Competition of Rieti (Italy). In 2015, he was a finalist in the “Supernova Klassiek” competition in Brussels, performing as a duo with Barbara Ardenois (Duo Multiple Choice).

Luca Pignata attended masterclasses with accordionists Claudio Jacomucci, Corrado Rojac, Massimiliano Pitocco, Luciano Biondini (Italy), Iñaki Alberdi (Spain), Jean Luc Manca (France), Pauline Oliveros (USA), Friedrich Lips, Sergej Tchirkov (Russia), Philippe Thuriot (Belgium) and with Butch Morris (USA) and Sigiswald Kuijken (Belgium).

From 2008 to 2013, he attended the “Master Course in Accordion” with Claudio Jacomucci and Kathleen Delaney, mastering his instrument and receiving lessons in the Alexander Technique. He continued to study the Alexander Technique with Stephen Parker (UK) and Katrien Vanderbeke (Belgium).

In 2007, he recorded the soundtrack for the silent film from the 1920s, “Blind Husbands” by Erich von Stroheim, under the direction of the composer Tiziano Popoli, with original compositions by the composer himself. The DVD was published by the Centro Audiovisivi of Bolzano.

In 2010, he performed “Conduction” no. 191 with American conductor Butch Morris at the “Südtirol Jazz Festival Alto Adige”.

In 2011-2012, he played in the instant improvisation group “The Comfort Zone” of Merano, and in Bolzano, he performed at the “Adige Risuona” festival under Staffan Mossenmark (Sweden).

In 2015, he performed as a soloist with the Orchestra of the Conservatory of Pescara, playing “Symphonic Fantasy and Allegro op.20” by Ole Schmidt.

Luca is a specialized teacher at CVO Panta Rhei in Ghent (Belgium).
